Bjarnason, Shot Blockers Stand Tall as Wheat Kings Stifle Hurricanes
March 8, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Carson Bjarnason surely has the Lethbridge Hurricanes' number.
Stopping all 23 shots he faced, Bjarnason shut out the Hurricanes for the second time this season in their building, and the Wheat Kings won the vitally important game 4-0. Matteo Michels, Joby Baumuller, Jayden Wiens, and Brett Hyland all scored in the win.
"Especially the last ten minutes of the first period were really strong," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "When Michels got that first goal, it kind of injected us with some energy. It was a pretty good road game all around."
After two successful penalty kills, it was the Wheat Kings' turn to look for offense. Michels took a handoff from Carter Klippenstein at centre ice and pulled a rabbit out of his hat, dangling his way right to the slot and roofing one on Harrison Meneghin.
Another bullet shot, this one from Baumuller, put the Wheat Kings ahead by two. Off a faceoff, Baumuller drifted into the slot, waited for a pass, and took the feed from Luke Shipley before blasting it home for the 2-0 lead.
Wasting no time, the Wheat Kings picked up where they'd left off in the second. Wiens found a rebound off the end well and took it right to the crease, getting two whacks at it before the second one slipped in to make it 3-0.
In a critical moment early in the third, it was the captain who came through. Wiens fed Hyland after some hard work on the forecheck by Nicholas Johnson and Hyland, poised at the left circle, blasted home the fourth Wheat Kings' tally of the night.
The Hurricanes pulled the goaltender twice even though they were down 4-0, but they couldn't break down strong back checking, shot blocking, and goaltending, and Bjarnason took his second straight shutout in appearances in Lethbridge.
The win halts a five-game skid for the Wheat Kings and puts them four points up on Lethbridge in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Next up are the Swift Current Broncos in Swift Current at 7:00 Central Time.
