Buffalo Bisons News Release
TODAY'S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons host the Louisville Bats in the third game of a four-game series at Dunn Tire Park (7:05 p.m.). The Herd is coming off two fantastic pitching performances, but Louisville has won the first two games of the closely-contested series. Starting tonight for the Herd is RHP Jeff Weaver. Weaver is making his Bisons debut with the team after signing a minor league contract with Cleveland on July 5. Taking the ball for Louisville will be RHP Justin Mallett.
WEAVER FEVER: RHP Jeff Weaver has been activated to the team today and gets the start tonight. The veteran pitcher began the season in the Pacific Coast League with the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee) and was 2-4 with a 6.22ERA in nine starts. Weaver is 93-114 with a 4.72ERA in 284 Major League appearances with the Tigers, Yankees, Dodgers, Angles and Cardinals. He won 14 games with the Dodgers in 2004 and collected three post season wins with the Cardinals in 2006. He was the winning pitcher in Game 5 of the 2006 World Series as St. Louis defeated Detroit four games to one.
BULLY FOR NEW PITCHER: RHP Bryan Bullington also joins the Bisons today, having been claimed off waivers (Pittsburgh) by the Indians on Thursday. The first overall draft pick in the 2002 First-Year Players Draft was 4-6 with a 5.52ERA in 15 games with the Indianapolis Indians this year.
ROSTER MOVES: To make roster room for RHP Jeff Weaver and RHP Bryan Bullington, INF Chris De La Cruz and RHP Frank Herrmann were transferred to Double-A Akron. Herrmann was 0-2 with a 1.38ERA in two starts while De La Cruz hit .140 (6-43) with four RBI in 18 games with the Bisons.
STRONG STAFF: Despite a pair of losses, the Bisons pitching staff has held the Bats to just two earned runs on 15 hits in the first two games of the series. Buffalo has also struck out 23 Louisville batters in the two contests. The Herd's team ERA now stands at 3.75, the third lowest mark in the International League.
BISONS BITS: OF Todd Linden enters tonight on a six-game hit streak. He has averaged .360 (9-25) over the span...OF Jason Cooper hit his 18th career Bisons triple last night. He is T3rd in the Modern Era, two behind INF/OF Joe Inglett's record (20).
