Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - After a disappointing 3-7 roadtrip that saw them drop back-to-back series against the Red Sox and RailRiders, the Bisons were back to their winning ways as Trenton Thunder Ballpark reopened at full capacity on Tuesday night. With the offense in a bit of a rut, the lineup used seven walks to overcome just four hits in the first game of their six-game series against the Mets. Kevin Smith had three of the four hits and scored the winning run in the ninth on a bases loaded walk from Logan Warmoth to end the Mets three-game winning streak and get Buffalo (13-10) its tenth win at home.
Sinkerballers T.J. Zeuch and Jesus Reyes drew the start to open a 12-game homestand, and it looked like the Herd might hammer away as they took the lead in the first inning. After Christian Colon led off with a walk, Breyvic Valera reached on an error via a bouncing ball hit hard up the middle. On the very next pitch, Smith smacked a line drive into center field for his team-leading 17th run batted in and a 1-0 lead. Reyes then settled down, and didn't allow his next hit until Warmoth doubled down the left field line in the fifth inning.
Zeuch's lead didn't last long, and he put runners at the corners immediately in the second when Khalil Lee doubled and Martin Cervenka blooped a single into right field. With one out, Nick Conti sent a high drive into right center that Forrest Wall caught as he jumped at the warning track. He started a relay to double up Cervenka at first for the final out, but not before Lee tagged from third to score the tying run.
The 1-1 tie held until the fifth as the Mets started a two out rally with a Drew Jackson single and stolen base. On a 1-2 pitch, Patrick Mazeika lined a hard double into the right field corner for his second hit and a 2-1 Mets lead. Zeuch finished the fifth after throwing 78 pitches (48 strikes), allowing the two runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He was later spared the decision thanks to some nifty baserunning from Colon in the bottom of the sixth.
After leading off the inning with a walk, Colon got to third base on a one out double from Smith. Cleanup hitter Tyler White then sent a very shallow fly into right field, and Colon tagged in an attempt to score the tying run. Quinn Brodey's throw would have arrived in plenty of time, but it shorthopped Mazeika and deflected into the backstop to tie the game at two apiece.
Patrick Murphy spun two scoreless innings in his Bisons debut as he continued his rehab assignment, using his curveball to get two strikeouts in the sixth before a flawless seventh. Jackson McClelland worked around two baserunners in the eighth by getting an inning-ending 3-6-1 double play ball off the bat of Brodey, and Jeremy Beasley (2-0) had an easy ninth.
Facing Bradley Roney for his second inning in the bottom of the ninth, Smith led off with his second double over the third base bag. White's groundout pushed Smith to third, and he watched as Cullen Large and Wall (intentional) were walked to load the bases with one out. Roney got the count to 3-2 on the next two hitters, picking up a strikeout before walking Warmoth to hand the Herd a 3-2 win in game one.
The series continues on Wednesday, June 2 at 7:00 PM when Anthony Kay makes his first start for the Bisons against Akeem Bostick (0-1, 9.00). Pregame coverage with Gregg Caserta, Dave Schofield, and Dave Popkin starts at 6:30 with the Bisons Pregame Show on the Bisons Radio Network. The first 1,200 fans ages 13+ will receive a Black Widow Bobblehead, presented by NJM Insurance. To purchase tickets, call (609)-394-3300, Opt 4 or visit trentonthunder.com.
