Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PEARL, MIS. - The Montgomery Biscuits (68-60/40-26) fell for the second-straight night to the Mississippi Braves (61-72/32-32), 5-3, Thursday night at Trustmark Stadium. The Biscuits' two home runs weren't enough as it was the only two base hits of the night for the butter and blue.
In the top of the first, M-Braves starter Tanner Gordon (9-6) kept the Biscuits at bay after an extended start to the game. Biscuits outfielder Kameron Misner was able to reach base after a fielding error by M-Braves first baseman Drew Lugbauer on the first pitch of the game. After a groundout, Gordon walked Biscuits first baseman Kyle Manzardo. The Biscuits then successfully pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third with just one out. After striking out Biscuits left fielder Evan Edwards, designated hitter Niko Hulsizer flew out after a 3-2 count.
In the bottom of the inning, Biscuits starter Sean Hunley (7-2) retired the side with three groundouts and a walk to left fielder Justyn-Henry Malloy. In the second inning, Hunley was able to ground out the first two of the M-Braves order. However, he would surrender a single from catcher Arden Pabst, an immediate double from second baseman Jordan Cowan, and then a two-run single from third baseman Riley Delgado to put the M-Braves up 2-0.
In the top of the third, Gordon retired the Biscuit side with all strikeouts and just 12 pitches. Fast forward to the top of the fifth and the Biscuits were able to tie the game at two after a home run from catcher Blake Hunt.
Hunley started the bottom of the fifth surrendering back-to-back singles before a mound visit. Lagbauer connected for an RBI-single to put the M-Braves back on top, 3-2. They manage to extend the lead to 4-2 after grounding into a double play. Biscuits reliever Justin Sterner replies Hunley and recorded a strikeout to get out of the inning.
Mississippi started the top of the sixth with a new arm on the mound as Coleman Huntley replaced Gordon. Gordon finished his night allowing just one hit, two runs, three walks, a home run, and seven strikeouts. With two outs, Hulsizer was able to deliver the second and last base hit of the game with a solo home run to left center to cut the lead to one, 4-3.
After a scoreless seventh, Mississippi got back in the driver's seat with a solo home run from Lugbauer to right center to make it 5-3. M-Braves reliever Justin Maese came in to close the game and give Mississippi their second-straight win and a 2-0 series lead. The Biscuits will look to bounce back Friday when the bullpen faces RHP Alan Rangel.
The Biscuits return to Riverwalk Stadium for Game 1 of the 2022 South Division Championship Series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Tuesday, September 20th at 6:35 PM.
