Montgomery Biscuits News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Following a walk-off loss last night, the Biscuits (37-39/9-5) bounced back with authority and took care of the Birmingham Barons (39-44/8-6), 11-4, on Wednesday night at Regions Field.
Emilio Vargas (1-3) started for the Barons, and the veteran right-hander retired lead-off batter Brett Wisely on a flyout, but then walked Greg Jones and Osleivis Basabe, before striking out Kameron Misner and Niko Hulsizer to end a scoreless top of the first inning.
Josh Roberson opened ahead of John Doxakis (1-3) for the Biscuits, and the righty retired the first two batters in the bottom of the first before allowing a double to Oscar Colas and a walk to Raudy Read. Roberson then struck out Moises Castillo with runners at first and second to get out of the inning unscathed.
Vargas struck out Jordan Qsar to begin the second inning but then walked Blake Hunt and allowed a single to Evan Edwards. Garrett Hiott flew out to left in the next at-bat, and then Wisely cracked an RBI-single to right to make it 1-0 Biscuits. Jones drilled a two-run double to right-center in the next at-bat and increased that lead to 3-0.
Roberson and Doxakis combined for a scoreless bottom of the second, with the latter getting the final out with Yoelqui Cespedes on third. Vargas struck out two more in the top of the third and kept it a 3-0 contest, and after Doxakis worked a scoreless bottom of the third, Vargas did the same in the top of the fourth.
Doxakis walked the first two batters to come to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, but got Luis Curbelo to bounce into a double play and then got Evan Skoug to fly out to center with a runner at third to end the threat.
Vargas was back on the mound in the top of the fifth, and Hulsizer tagged the Dominican righty for an RBI-single to make it 4-0 Biscuits. Sammy Peralta came on for Vargas, and the lefty served up a two-run double to Hunt to increase the Montgomery lead to 6-0 at the midway point.
Doxakis issued his fourth walk of the night in a scoreless bottom of the fifth and still hadn't allowed a hit against the Barons lineup through his first 3.1 innings. The Biscuits tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 9-0 thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Misner, a Hulsizer sac fly, and a Qsar RBI-double off the wall in right-center. Doxakis then fanned his first two batters in a scoreless bottom of the sixth.
After a scoreless top of the seventh, the Barons finally got on the board thanks to an RBI-single by Read that scored Colas from second and made it a 9-1 game in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Sterner came on for Doxakis and threw one pitch to get out of the seventh, and then worked a one-two-three eighth, striking out a pair.
Wisely crushed a two-run home run off position player J.J. Muno in the top of the ninth to make it 11-1. The Barons added three runs off Jose Lopez in the bottom of the ninth.
The Biscuits will go for their second-straight win on Thursday when Sean Hunley (3-1) goes up against Jason Bilous (4-6) at 7:05 PM CT.
The Biscuits are in the middle of a six-game road trip, but will return to Riverwalk Stadium after the All-Star break for a three-game series against the Mississippi Braves for Gump Weekend beginning on Friday, July 22 at 6:35 PM CT when there will be an Adult Greenbow Biscuits Replica Jersey Giveaway presented by Direct Auto Insurance.
The rest of the series will include Fitness Night & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, July 23 at 6:05 PM CT, and a Kids Replica Jersey Giveaway presented by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing of Alabama & Bark in the Park on Sunday, July 24 at 3:33 PM CT.
