Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (4-2) scored all of their runs in the first three innings and pitched just well enough to defeat the Tennessee Smokies (3-3), 6-5, on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Rays number six prospect Mason Montgomery made his second start of the season, and the left-hander allowed a one-out double to Miguel Amaya, but retired everyone else in a scoreless top of the first.
Cubs number 29 prospect Ryan Jensen (0-2) started on the mound for the Smokies, and the right-hander did not make it out of the first inning, surrendering four walks-including one with the bases loaded to Heriberto Hernandez-to make it 1-0 Biscuits. Dalton Stambaugh entered after the four walks and two Jensen strikeouts, but served up a two-run single to Alexander Ovalles, who increased the Biscuits' lead to 3-0.
Montgomery struck out two batters in the top of the second, but allowed an RBI-triple to Owen Caissie that got the Smokies on the board at 3-1. Tristan Peters thumped an RBI-double off Stambaugh in the bottom of the second to put the Biscuits back up by three at 4-1. After Montgomery struck out the side in the top of the third, Evan Edwards blasted a two-run homer to straightaway center in the bottom of the third and made it a 6-1 game.
Carlos Garcia (1-0) came on for Montgomery and spun a scoreless top of the fourth in what was the Dominican righty's first appearance of the season. The game remained 6-1 until the top of the sixth, when Jordan Nwogu hit a three-run home run to left, and Owen Caissie a solo homer to left-center, on back-to-back pitches to make it 6-5.
Enmanuel Mejia bailed out Garcia for the last out of the top of the sixth, and then worked a one-two-three seventh. Michael Mercado struck out the side in the top of the eighth after walking Nelson Maldonado, and kept it a 6-5 game, before Graham Spraker struck out two in a perfect ninth to seal the win and earn his first Biscuit save.
The Biscuits will aim to make it back-to-back victories against the Smokies on Friday when Antony Molina (0-1) clashes with Jordan Wicks (0-0) on Teacher Appreciation Night presented by Whataburger at 6:35 PM.
The rest of the six-game series will include Jackie Robinson Day & The Nine Night & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, April 15, and Lil' Crumbs T-Shirt Giveaway presented by AKD on Sunday, April 16.
