BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Biscuits (7-10) kept it close, but ultimately came up short, falling to the Barons (12-6), 5-4, to split the series 3-3 with Birmingham in Sunday afternoon's finale at Regions Field.
The Biscuits drew first blood with two runs in the top of the first against Barons starter Emilio Vargas. First Cal Stevenson knocked in a run with an RBI-single to right, and then Seaver Whalen cracked a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Dillon Paulson, which made it 2-0 Biscuits early on.
Michael Plassmeyer (0-1) made his third start of the season for Montgomery, and after retiring the first two batters he faced, the lefty allowed a solo home run to Romy Gonzalez on a 3-0 pitch to right field to cut the Biscuits lead in half at 2-1.
The Barons would tie the game on a double steal of home and second by Joel Booker and Mitch Roman in the second, and then took a 3-2 lead on Ti'Quan Forbes home run to straightaway center in the third. Garrett Whitley's RBI-single in the fourth tied things back up at three for the Biscuits.
Plassmeyer walked two batters in the fifth, which led to Simon Rosenblum-Larson entering the game for the lefty. After hitting Carlos Perez to load the bases, Rosenblum-Larson walked Craig Dedelow to put the Barons back in front at 4-3. Then a wild pitch by Alan Strong made it a 5-3 game in the sixth.
Stevenson added a sac fly in the eighth to make it 5-4, but it was not enough, as Bennett Sousa struck out the side in the ninth to end the game.
The Biscuits will now head to Pearl, Mississippi to open up a six-game series against the M-Braves on Tuesday when RHP Tobias Myers (1-0) squares off against RHP Nolan Kingham (1-1) at 6:35 PM CT.
The Biscuits will be back at Riverwalk Stadium to open up a 12-game home stand on June 1 beginning with a six-game series against the Biloxi Shuckers on a Golden Biscuits Tuesday. The rest of the series against the Shuckers includes a Military Wednesday presented by WOW! on Wednesday, June 2; A Hey Butter Butter T-Shirt Giveaway presented by Whataburger on Thursday June 3; A Chicken & Baker Bobblehead Giveaway presented by Capital Trailways on Friday June 4; 90s Night with MAX Fireworks on Saturday June 5; and a Rays Day Poster.
