Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Birmingham Barons rolled over the Biscuits, 8-1, in a lop-sided game one from Regions Park on Tuesday night.
The Barons grabbed the lead quickly against Biscuits' starter Brian Baker in the first inning. Jordan Danks led off the inning with a double into the corner in right field. Danks was sacrificed to third and scored to make it 1-0 Barons when C.J. Retherford lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Biscuits response didn't come until the fourth inning, when they finally broke through against Barons' starter Charlie Shirek. Shirek walked Chris Nowak for the second time in the ballgame with one out. Fernando Cortez doubled to move Nowak to third base and Cody Cipriano brought him in with an RBI ground out to second base.
The Barons took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as Retherford led off the inning with a single. Baker then hit Dayan Viciedo with a pitch. Stefan Gartrell then forced Viciedo at second base, leaving runners at the corners with one out. Christian Marrero gave the lead back to the Barons with an RBI single to score Retherford. Lee Cruz then brought in two with a double down the left-field line and John Shelby capped a four-run inning with a double to extend the Barons lead to 5-1.
Birmingham put the game away and finally chased Baker in the seventh inning. Rob Hudson supplied a two-run single to cap the scoring for the evening. Baker (5-2) took the loss after surrendering seven runs, all earned on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out one.
Shirek (4-3) had just the lone hiccup in the fourth inning, as he rolled to his fourth win of the season. He lasted seven innings, allowing just the lone run on six hits. He walked two and struck out three.
The Barons finished the scoring with a lone run off reliever Ryan Reid in the eighth inning, capping the score at 8-1. With the victory, the Barons own a 12-3 advantage in the season-series between the two clubs.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Wednesday night at Regions Park. RHP Heath Rollins (8-8, 3.95) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Justin Cassel (2-1, 4.15) for Birmingham.
