Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (34-36/6-2) erased a 4-0 first inning deficit and came back to beat the Biloxi Shuckers (36-39/2-6), 8-4, on Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The Biscuits have now defeated the Shuckers in 14-straight games in Montgomery.
Michael Mercado made his 10th start of the season for the Biscuits, and the right-hander allowed four runs on four hits in the top of the first inning including a two-run double to Jakson Reetz, and RBI-singles to Noah Campbell and Gabe Holt to make it 4-0 Biloxi early.
T.J. Shook (2-1) started on the other side for the Shuckers, and the righty surrendered a lead-off double to Brett Wisely, before retiring the next three batters to come to the plate in the bottom of the first, including Greg Jones on a swinging strikeout to keep it a 4-0 game after one.
Mercado settled down and worked a one-two-three top of the second, before Blake Hunt's RBI-single pulled back a run for the Biscuits in the bottom of the second and made it 4-1.
Joe LaSorsa (1-0), who was called up from A+ Bowling Green on Wednesday, came on for Mercado and made his Double-A debut in the top of the third. After allowing a lead-off single to Andruw Monasterio and hitting Reetz, the southpaw got Thomas Dillard to ground into a double play, and then got Campbell to ground out to end the scoreless frame.
The Biscuits loaded the bases against Shook in the bottom of the third thanks to a hit-by-pitch and two walks before Niko Hulsizer flexed out Montgomery's first grand slam of the season to make it 5-4 Butter and Blue. The grand slam was the third of Hulsizer's Biscuit career, with all three coming against the Shuckers.
Caleb Sampen relieved LaSorsa and worked a scoreless fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh in one of the right-hander's most impressive outings of the season. Brett Wisely's RBI-single and a J.T. Hintzen wild pitch then made it 7-4 Biscuits in the bottom of the fifth, and then another wild pitch by Robbie Hitt increased that lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the seventh.
Chris Gau came on for Sampen in the eighth and kept the Shuckers off the board for the final two frames as the Biscuits improved to 6-2 in the Second Half and remained in first place in the Second Half South Division. Biscuit batters were also hit five times en rout to their fourth-straight victory.
The Biscuits will try to make it five in a row on Thursday when Taj Bradley (3-1) takes on Nick Bennett (3-7) at 6:35 PM CT when there will be a Bobblehead T-Shirt Giveaway presented by ARC of Alabama & Thirsty Thursday.
The rest of the series will include Military Wednesday presented by WOW! on July 6; Bobblehead T-Shirt Giveaway presented by ARC of Alabama & Thirsty Thursday on July 7; Kimchi Bobblehead Giveaway presented by Pulmuone & Jersey Auction on Friday, July 8; Mystery Bobblehead Night & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, July 9; and a Fishing Bobber Giveaway presented by Go Fish Alabama & Bark in the Park on Sunday, July 10.
