Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
(ONEONTA, NY) The seven game road trip got off to a rocky start in Oneonta on Independence Day as the IronBirds were upended by the Tigers, 7-2.
Southpaw pitcher Nick Haughian toed the rubber for the visiting âBirds and through three innings he pitched extremely effectively. Haughian faced one over the minimum and through three frames, the game remained scoreless.
The Tigers broke the scoring silence in the home half of the fourth when Rawley Bishop launched a 3-1 fastball over the left field fence for a solo home run.
Oneonta piled on five more in the fifth as the rally was sparked on a controversial play. With two strikes, Chris Sedon swung through a high fastball and reached base as IronBirds backstopper Brian Ward couldn't glove it. Then Jim Gulliver got aboard on an infield single and Jaime Johnson smacked a base hit to left to plate Sedon. The Tiger would then load the bags for the dangerous Bishop. Bishop didn't disappoint the capacity crowd as he smacked his second homer of the game, a grand slam, to extend the lead to 6-0.
More insurance showed up in the seventh when John Murrian laced a single to center to score Alexis Espinoza from third. Through seven, the âBirds trailed 7-0.
Aberdeen would avoid the shutout with a late rally in the ninth. Two sacrifice flies by Arthur Bonevacia and Ward, respectively, brought home the only two runs home for the IronBirds. When it was all said and done, the IronBirds fell, 7-2.
Haughian was dinged with his second loss of the year as his counterpart Nate Newman earned win number one for the Tigers.
Tomorrow night, Collin Allen will take the hill for the IronBirds. Catch all the action on the IronBirds Radio Network by tuning in via the web: ironbirdsbaseball.com.
