Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
(ABERDEEN, MD) - After running away 5-0 in last night's contest, the Ironbirds struggled to get the offense going, getting shut out by the Lake Monsters 1-0 in the rubber game of the 3-game series.
Tyler Sexton and Mitchell Clegg dueled into the fifth inning, however Sexton outlasted Clegg pitching into the sixth inning, leaving it to the bullpens to earn the decisions.
Richard D'Oleo electrified the crowd, hitting his fourth triple of the season with two down in the bottom of the sixth giving the âBirds an opportunity to strike first. The âBirds were unable to take the lead as Garabez Rosa grounded out to end the inning leaving the game scoreless through six.
Vermont's Jack Walker delivered the first blow in the contest, launching a homerun to left field off Jake Cowan in the top of seventh to put the Lake Monsters up 1-0. Cowan shook it off and continued on, pitching a scoreless eighth and leaving it to James Brandhorst to hold off the Lake Monsters in the ninth.
Brandhorst returned the favor pitching a scoreless ninth and giving the âBirds one last chance to steal the game and the series.
In the ninth, the âBirds were unable to score and got shut out by Vermont.
Sexton finished allowing no runs but two hits over 6.0 innings with five strikeouts and three walks. Cowan received the loss after giving up the homer to Walker.
Vermont's Clegg went 5.0 innings, four hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks.
The âBirds will head to Vermont in August for a 3-game series seeking revenge.
Tomorrow, the âBirds open up a 3-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers as Kenny Moreland (3-1) looks to continue his success against the Scrappers' Kyle C. Smith (0-1). The game is scheduled for 7:05.
