Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
ABERDEEN, MD --- Jack Walker smacked a two-out homer in the top of the seventh inning for the only run of the game as four Lake Monster pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout in a 1-0 New York-Penn League victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds Sunday afternoon at Ripken Stadium.
Walker's home run, his first of season, came on the first pitch that he saw from reliever Jacob Cowan in the seventh inning. It was the first run for the Lake Monsters in 16 innings as Vermont had been shutout by Aberdeen on Saturday night in a 5-0 loss.
Vermont starter Mitchell Clegg went the first five innings, allowing four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He gave up back-to-back singles and a walk with two outs in the first inning, but got Garabez Rosa to ground out ending the Ironbirds best scoring opportunity of the game.
Richard D'Oleo had a two-out triple in the sixth inning off reliever Shane Erb, but that would be the last base runner of the game for Aberdeen as the final 10 batters of the game were retired. Erb got Rosa to groundout to end the sixth, then Gary Amato tossed two perfect innings and Clayton Dilll a perfect ninth for his fifth save of the season.
Dani Arias and J.R. Higley both had two hits for Vermont, while Erb (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings for his first win of the season. The victory, coupled with the Lake Monsters 6-5 win over the Ironbirds on Friday, gave Vermont its first-ever series win at Aberdeen in six played all-time.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Lake Monsters pitching staff, while marking Vermont's first 1-0 victory since June 21, 2008 when the Lake Monsters won at Lowell on a Robby Jacobsen solo home run in the 10th.
With the win in the series and roadtrip finale, Vermont (15-14) went 3-3 on the six-game roadtrip. The Lake Monsters return home to historic Centennial Field on Monday night as they host the Brooklyn Cyclones in a three-game series. Both Monday's game, which includes the display of the 2004 and 2007 Boston Red Sox World Series trophies, and Tuesday's begin at 7:05 p.m. while Wednesday series finale will start at 1:05 p.m.
