SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Sioux Falls Canaries pulled out one of their most thrilling wins of the 2020 season Tuesday, coming from behind to beat the Chicago Dogs 6-4 in their first true road game of the season at Impact Field.
Jabari Henry and Andrew Ely homered for the Birds (7-3) who increased their lead in the American Association standings.
The Birds trailed 4-1 after six innings, but scored five unanswered runs over the final three frames to hand the Dogs (3-6) the defeat.
Sioux Falls jumped out in front in the first on Henry's home run. The solo shot was his third of the year.
Chicago responded with two runs in the bottom of the first off Canary starter Ty Culbreth. Joey Terdoslavich knocked an RBI single, and Tyler Ladendorf hit a sacrifice flag to give the Dogs the lead.
The Dogs added a run in the fourth largely on Ladendorf's speed. He led off the inning with a single, then took second on a ground ball. He stole second and later scored on a Culbreth wild pitch to make it 3-1 Chicago.
A throwing error from Canary third baseman Damek Tomscha allowed a fourth Dogs run to score in the sixth.
Culbreth left the game after six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out six.
The Birds' comeback began in the seventh. Clint Coulter led the inning off with double and Mike Hart was hit with a pitch, chasing Dogs starter Jake Dahlberg from the game.
Logan Landon reached on an infield single off reliever Garrett Granitz, loading the bases. Ryan Brett flied out to shallow center for out number one, and KC Huth hit a sacrifice fly to right to make it 4-2 Chicago with two out.
Dogs manager Butch Hobson brought on Wes Helsabeck to pitch to Ely, who fouled off seven pitches in an 11-pitch at-bat. He hit an RBI single to score Hart and cut the deficit to 4-3.
Jalen Miller came on to pitch to Henry, who knocked an RBI single to tie the score.
The Birds took the league in the top of the eighth on a Logan Landon RBI double, scoring Tomscha.
The Dogs threatened in the eighth against Birds reliever Kevin Folman. After a pair of hits put runners on first and third with no one out, Ladendorf stole second on a third-strike pitch to Michael Crouse. KC Hobson made a late break for the plate after Ladendorf drew the throw, but was tagged out at home after a return throw from Brett. The 2-2-4-2 strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play marked the first two outs of the inning. Folman struck out Victor Roache with Ladendorf on second to get out of the jam.
Ely's solo home run in the ninth gave the Canaries a 6-4 cushion, and Keaton Steele came on to record the save. The Dogs loaded the bases with two out, but Terdoslavich hit a sinking liner that Birds center fielder KC Huth tracked down for a running catch. The runner on second, Blake Allemand, strayed too far from the bag, and was out on a game-ending 8-6 double play.
