Big Texas Cuts the Sea Dawgs Down to Size

April 14, 2012 - Tobacco Road Basketball League (TRBL)
Wilmington Sea Dawgs News Release

The unbeaten string of the Wilmington Sea Dawgs came to an unlucky end on Friday the thirteenth, as they fell to visiting Big Texas 100-93 after blowing a large third quarter lead. The Sea Dawgs were lead by James Rhodes with 23, Damien Brown with 14, and Big Mike Gibbs with 13. Big Texas was led by Dana Pickitt with 30 and Nate Priest with 21.

Big Texas led 29-25 at the end of a very even first quarter that saw good outside shooting by them and aggressive defense by the Sea Dawgs, including a couple of big second chance baskets by James Rhodes.

The second quarter was a fast up and down affair. However, led by strong rebounding from Mike Gibbs, J.J. Cook, and Rhodes and relentless driving to the hoop, the Sea Dawgs pushed out to a halftime lead of 54-48.

Big Texas started the third quarter with a gambling defense. However, Big Texas lost the gamble as the Dawgs turned overplays into quick points, and behind more strong play by James Rhodes and a clinic from outside by Masevai Davis the Sea Dawgs pushed it out to an 82-68 lead after three quarters. However, Big Texas gambled again and won big, taking a lead that seesawed back and forth until Big Texas pushed out to a lead with a minute left that they never relinquished.

The Sea Dawgs try to get back on track on the road Saturday April 14th at 5:00 PM for a rematch with the PrimeTime Players. The Dawgs will be back at the Schwartz Center Friday May 11th at 7:00 PM to try to exact some revenge against Big Texas.
