Wilmington Sea Dawgs News Release
Strong outside shooting by the Wilmington Sea Dawgs could not overcome stronger Fayetteville interior offense and defense as they lose to the Fayetteville Crossover 119 - 110 in their 2013 Tobacco Road Basketball League opener.
The Sea Dawgs opened their season with several changes, not the least of which was their move to Blizzard Athletics, run by former UNCW great Brett Blizzard . Also, long time Wilmington player Joseph King was promoted to player-assistant coach and Dale Kuhl was replaced as head coach by Louis Defeliceantonio .
The first quarter was a case of inside versus outside, as the Sea Dawgs hot perimeter shooting including Zach Herrmann and Jamal Carpenter was countered by strong inside play by the Crossover. At the end of the first Wilmington held a slim 35-32 lead.
Fayetteville ratcheted up the defense to start the second quarter. Fayetteville's strong inside play continued from Kenny Haywood and Dashawn McLean but the Wilmington outside shot well ran dry and the Crossover pushed out to a 64-51 halftime lead.
Early in the third the Dawgs tried to work the inside while the Crossover settled for outside shots. This chipped into the lead. But sloppy passing by Wilmington allowed Fayetteville to push the lead back out. In an attempt to stiffen the defense, the Sea Dawgs ended up committing 11 team fouls in the quarter.
Wilmington then cut into the lead with better passing, stronger inside play, and the return of outside shooting. The Dawgs managed to cut the lead down to two at one point, but the Crossover weathered the storm and escaped with the victory.
The Wilmington Sea Dawgs next home game will be at Blizzard Athletics April 20th at 7PM against the Queen City Express.
