Queen City Express Outlasts Wilmington Sea Dawgs, 100-95

Stiffening late defense and a fourth quarter offensive push by Wilmington were not enough to keep the visiting Queen City Express from handing the Sea Dawgs their third straight loss, 100-95 at Blizzard Athletics.

In the first quarter, the Sea Dawgs showed off extremely effective interior passing (including a beautiful no-look pass by Zach Herrmann) leading to several high percentage buckets and pushing them out to a 27 to 16 first quarter lead over the Express.

At the start of the second quarter, Queen City closed off the passing lanes and increased their offensive aggressiveness, erasing the Wilmington lead. The Sea Dawgs stopped the bleeding and played even with the Express the rest of the way to end the half down by just 3, 42-39.

Careless ball handling by the Dawgs allowed the Express to push out the lead, led by strong Express interior play by Phil Barnes and outside shooting by Ryan Vann. An injury to Barnes midway throught the quarter did little to put the brakes on the Express. But assertive play by Wilmington's Chris Clark toward the end of the quarter kept the Queen City lead to just 71-67. Barnes returned in the fourth quarter.

After an initial fourth quarter push by Queen City, the Sea Dawgs chipped away at the lead, led by Clark and David Pearman, who hit a crucial three pointer to cut the lead to one with less than 30 seconds to play. But a clutch three pointer put a dagger in the Wilmington comeback.

The Sea Dawgs hit the road before returning to action on May 4th at 7PM to host the TRBL champion PrimeTime Players at Blizzard Athletics.
