York Revolution News Release
(York, Pa.) - Sugar Land sent home six in the ninth, including four on a grand slam by Jeremy Barfield, as the Skeeters managed a series split with the York Revolution 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at PeoplesBank Park. York will look to rebound on Monday night as the Bridgeport Bluefish come to town for a four-game set.
Tied 3-3 in the ninth, the Skeeters (6-5) got one-out singles from Jeff Dominguez and Delwyn Young. Ex-Rev Travis Scott laced a base hit into right field to give Sugar Land its first lead of the day, then Andy LaRoche made it a two-run lead with an RBI single of his own. After a walk loaded the bases, Barfield brought the pain with a towering shot over the Arch Nemesis.
The Revs (5-6) could only muster a solitary single in their half of the ninth inning, failing to make it three wins in a row.
Robbie Weinhardt (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Michael Click (0-1) was tagged for the loss after giving up all six ninth-inning runs.
After a scoreless inning and a half, Bryan Pounds started a second inning rally with a leadoff walk. James Simmons then singled and Keith Castillo banged one off the base of the Arch Nemesis to score Pounds. After a sac bunt, Jason Repko singled home a run. Josh Wilson smacked a sac fly to right to plate Castillo and make it a 3-0 York lead.
The Revs had a chance to break it open in the fourth, loading the bases with one out. Wilson and Andres Perez could only manage popups to second, though, and the home side came up empty.
Sugar Land inched closer with a run in the fifth on Wilfredo Rodriguez's sac fly. Scott brought the Skeeters even with a towering two-run homer to right in the sixth.
The Skeeters threatened to take the lead, loading the bases with nobody out in the eighth. Fireballer Wes Alsup then reached down deep, striking out Jeremy Barfield on three pitches and getting weak contact outs from the next two to strand runners everywhere.
Barfield played a starring role in the finale, going 4-for-5 with two runs, a double, and his ninth-inning slam. Scott also drove in three runs.
Joel Guzman rapped up his fine series by going 2-for-4, finishing the set 8-for-16 with a double, homer, and five RBIs.
York used six pitchers on the afternoon as starter Micah Owings went two-scoreless, one-hit innings in his first professional action since June 2, 2014. Daniel Carela handled the next two innings and struck out four after taking a line drive off the right shin in the third.
Sean Gallagher started for the Skeeters and did not factor into the decision after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings.
Notes: Six runs matches the largest ninth inning against the Revs in team history, equaling Newark's ninth on May 16, 2010, and the Road Warriors' effort on Sept. 3, 2011. Jason Repko stretched his hitting streak to 11 with the RBI single in the second, making it the longest to start the 2016 season in the Atlantic League. Repko is hitting .313 (15-for-48) through the first week and a half. York will look to bounce back on Monday night as the Revs face the Bridgeport Bluefish for the first time this season. York's Kelvin De La Cruz will square off with Bridgeport's Mike Antonini in a matchup of lefties. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 6:10 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Will DeBoer on the call. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
