Joliet Slammers News Release

Joliet, IL - A huge seven-run eighth inning propels the Joliet Slammers (3-4) to their third straight win in front of a packed house at Silver Cross Field against the Gateway Grizzlies (2-5). The Slammers topped their division rivals 7-3.

The Grizzlies took the early lead against lefty Brett DeVall. After putting two on but failing to score in the first, the Grizzlies cashed in with a runner in scoring position in the third. Catcher Grant Nelson led off with a single and later moved to second on a walk. With two outs SS Ronaldo Gomez walked and CF Blake Brown drove him with a single down the left field line. Devall limited the damage by retiring 3B Grant Buckner to end the inning, the Grizzlies leading 1-0.

The Slammers threatened to score in both the fourth and fifth innings, but couldn't crack starter Tyler Thompson. The Grizzlies came back with a pair of runs in the sixth frame with the Slammers bullpen in. 2B Josh Adams reached with a leadoff single against John Maloney. 1B Ben Waldrip walked. Nelson moved both runners up a bag with a bunt back to the pitcher and each came around to score on a throwing error by 2B Adrian English. The fielding blunder led to two runs, putting the Grizzlies up 3-0 after the sixth inning.

Joliet erupted for seven runs in the eighth to take a four-run lead. Playing in his first game of the year, LF JD Williams walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a CF Charlie White single. RF Nate Roberts doubled to score Williams and moved White to third, and 1b Chris Serritella walked to load the bases. DH Russell Moldenhauer drilled a double to right field on the first pitch he saw from Brett Zawacki to drive in two and tie the game. With two runners in scoring position, 3B Mike Garza drilled a single to right field, scoring Serritella and giving the Slammers the 4-3 lead. SS Alfredo Rodriguez knocked in Moldenhauer with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, and 2B Adrian English moved Garza to third with a two-bagger. A wild pitch scored Garza, and after a pitch got away from the catcher Nelson, English crossed home to give the Slammers a 7-3 lead. Closer Navery Moore struck out the side in the ninth, preserving the Slammers third straight win. Pitcher Sam Moore earned the victory after tossing a scoreless eighth and Moldenhauer earned honors as the Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game.
