Big second inning fuels 16-1 win over Elmira

Newark NY, July 12th, 2013 -- The Newark Pilots (12-19) scored 10 runs in the second inning to overpower the Elmira Pioneers (14-14) by a final of 16-1 Friday night at Colburn Park.
Newark's offense exploded for 10 runs on eight hits in the second inning. However, all 10 runs were unearned as Elmira's middle infielders were each credited with an error in the first two at-bats of the inning. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double from Max Rosing (Cortland), which gave the Pilots a 7-0 lead. Later in the inning Sam Fox (Pomona-Pitzer) drove in a pair of runs with a single to center field, giving Newark an 11-0 lead.
Elmira starter Chris Gould (1-2, Saint Rose) was tagged with the loss after pitching 1 2/3 innings. Of the 11 runs he surrendered, only one was earned.
Rosing came up big again as part of a three-run third inning for the Pilots. He hit his second double of the game, earning his game-high fourth RBI.
Justin D'Amato (2-1, St. John Fisher) cruised to his second win of the season. He exited with a 14-0 lead after five scoreless innings with five strikeouts. In his last outing against Elmira on June 21, his offense provided two runs of support in a 2-1 victory, which was Newark's only other win against the Pioneers in the first six games of the season series.
The Pilots struck again in the seventh inning, padding their lead with two more runs. With the bases loaded, Elmira reliever Austin Hill (Corning C.C.) issued consecutive walks to Taylor Hinshaw (Georgia College) and Jacob Russell (University of Kentucky), extending the insurmountable lead to 16-0.
The Pioneers broke the shutout in the top of the ninth with two outs. This time around Newark's middle infielders each booted what would have been the game ending groundout. Newark reliever Eddie Emes (Penn State Greater Allegheny) walked Taylor Hillson (Mansfield H.S.) with the bases loaded, giving the Pioneers their only run of the contest.
Emes earned his first save of the season with four innings of relief on the mound. Rosing and Fox each finished with a game-high three hits. Nine different Pilots scored at least one run, led by Chad Adams (Saint Rose) with three. Russell's three RBI extends his team-lead to 23 on the season. Andrew Nist (Temple) and Frankie Navarrete (Samford) combined for four of Elmira's eight hits with two apiece.
Tomorrow, Newark will travel to the Robert Smith Sports Complex to face the Adirondack Trail Blazers before hosting them in a double-header on Sunday at Colburn Park; first pitch is scheduled at 5:05 p.m. The Pioneers are staying home this weekend, facing Mohawk Valley on Saturday and the Utica Brewers on Sunday at Dunn Field.
