Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SYDNEY, NS - The Saint John Sea Dogs pushed past the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 6-2 at Centre 200 in Sydney in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday night.
Michael Mastrangelo scored his first QMJHL goal and Stephen MacAulay, Ryan Tesink and Marcus Cuomo had a goal and an assist each. Jonathan Huberdeau and Jason Seed added two assists apiece and Kevin Gagne and Jakub Izacky added singles for the Sea Dogs while Noah Zilbert chipped in an assist for his first QMJHL point. Sebastien Auger made 23 stops on 25 shots. The Sea Dogs record now stands at 9-8-0-0 with the win.
William Carrier had a goal and an assist and Alexandre Lavoie added a single for the Screaming Eagles. Philippe Trudeau made 22 saves on 28 shots before giving way to Alex Bureau at 50:20. Bureau faced only four shots and stopped them all after coming on in relief, as Cape Breton dropped to 5-9-2-2.
Gagne is close to being part of Sea Dogs history as he tied the franchise record for games played by a defenceman. Suiting up Friday in his 251stgame tied the record set by Yann Sauve.
It didn't take long for the Sea Dogs to get on the board with MacAulay's eighth goal and first even-strength marker of the year. Jason Seed and Tesink started the play to grab the assists on the opening goal at 3:11.
The Sea Dogs went up by two as Tesink put the puck in front of the net, which was put in by a Screaming Eagle player trying to clear the crease. Tesink's seventh goal came unassisted at 6:46.
Sea Dogs rookie Cuomo made his weight felt by laying out Jonathan Oligny at centre ice with a big hit around the 8-minute mark. Jurij Repe also threw his weight around early crushing Cole Murphy into the boards.
Mastrangelo tallied his first QMJHL goal and Zilbert his first point on a great dump-and-chase play by the checking line at 13:44. Andreas Tsogkas dumped the puck into the offensive zone that was picked up by Zilbert and fed in front for Mastrangelo to finish off the play for the Sea Dogs third goal.
The Eagles pulled back into the game with their first at 15:10. Carrier tallied his team leading 11th of the year to make the score 3-1.
While the shots were even at 11, the score wasn't with the Sea Dogs up 3-1 at the end of the first.
The Screaming Eagles pulled within one as Lavoie tied the goal-scoring lead for Cape Breton back up with 12:45 remaining in the middle frame.
Marcus Cuomo made it 4-2 Sea Dogs with his second of the season at 14:10 on a great feed from Olivier LeBlanc up to Huberdeau. Huberdeau put the puck across the blue line where Cuomo picked it up and using Tesink as a decoy, fired a hard wrist shot past Trudeau.
Auger started the third with a great glove save on Michael Clarke seconds into the period.
The Sea Dogs scored a pair of goals to pull away in the third. Gagne scored his third of the season at 8:43 with assists to MacAulay and Huberdeau. Izacky added his fourth of the season at 10:20, getting a little help from the post. Cuomo added the assist, giving him his first multi-point game in a Sea Dog uniform.
Cooper nearly made it 7-2 on a nifty passing play by Stephen Anderson and Cuomo to set him up in front of the net, but back-up netminder Bureau made a great save, to keep the game 6-2, the final score.
The Sea Dogs return home on Sunday for Support our Troops day at Harbour Station with puck drop at 3 PM. It's also a CAA Sunday Fun-day and fans can save when they show their CAA card. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station box office, online at tickets.harbourstation.caor by calling 657-1234.
