Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (10-4) beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 11-10 at Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night.
With the Goldeyes trailing 10-9 in the top of the ninth inning, Reggie Abercrombie led off with an infield single and advanced to third when Willy Garcia ripped a double down the left field line. Wes Darvill tied the game with a line drive single to left. It was Darvill's fifth hit and fifth RBI of the night, both of which are new career single-game highs. Two batters later, James Harris hit a sacrifice fly to shallow centre in which Garcia raced home ahead of Brett Vertigan's throw.
The Canaries (6-8) pushed the tying run to second in the bottom of the ninth before Victor Capellan retired Andrew Ely on a flyball to right to earn his sixth save of the year.
Mitchell Aker helped keep the Goldeyes within striking distance in the bottom of the eighth. The Canaries loaded the bases with no outs on three consecutive walks before Aker retired Clint Coulter on an infield fly popup to second. Aker then escaped the jam altogether when Kevin Taylor grounded into an inning-ending double play at second. Aker battled Taylor for nine pitches, and Taylor had fouled off four consecutive two-strike offerings before the double play.
Aker (1-1) picked up the win in relief, while Ryan Flores (0-2) took the loss for the Canaries.
Darvill opened the scoring in the top of the second with a solo home run down the left field line that landed just inside the foul pole.
Winnipeg scored four runs in the top of the third. Kevin Lachance blasted a leadoff home run to left-centre. Josh Romanski reached on an error by Coulter in right, and two batters later, advanced to second on a single from Willy Garcia. A wild pitch moved runners to second and third, and the Goldeyes stretched their lead to 4-1 when Darvill chopped a two-run single up the middle. A pair of wild pitches sent Darvill to third, setting up a sacrifice fly to centre from Harris.
The Goldeyes added four more runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Willy Garcia doubled down the right field line to score Cody Young and Lachance. Young singled leading off the inning for his first career professional hit. Darvill chipped in another RBI single, while Garcia scored the Goldeyes' ninth run on a wild pitch.
Trailing 9-1, the Canaries scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to climb back into the game. With the bases loaded and one out, Alay Lago hit an RBI single to right. Michael Hart was then hit by a pitch to force home a run. Former Goldeye Jordan Ebert singled through the right side to plate two more and cut the Goldeyes' lead to 9-5. Ebert advanced to second base on the throw to the plate. After Christian Torres relieved Goldeyes' starter Parker French, a wild pitch moved Ebert to third before Ely singled in the Canaries' seventh run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lago doubled home Coulter to make it a one-run game. Hart followed with a two-run single that gave the Canaries their first lead of the night at 10-9.
French took a no-decision, allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits in five and one-third innings. French walked one and struck out one.
Spencer Herrmann started for the Canaries and also took a no-decision, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits in three innings. Herrmann walked three and struck out three.
