MARTINSVILLE, V.A. - After batteling back from an early two-run deficit, a three run bottom of the sixth cost the HiToms as they fell to Martinsville 7-3 in the Coastal Plain League opener on Tuesday night at Hooker Field.
Thomasville (0-1) had 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth as Chris Branigan delivered a single to right which scored Zack Briggs. The HiToms threated for more, but with the bases loaded, James Harris struck out looking to end the possibility of a big inning.
That proved to be costly as Martinsville (1-0) chased Austin Moyer (L 0-1) from the game with a single by AJ Nunziato. A one out walk to Justin Sizemore sent Moyer to the dugout in favor of Connor Scarborough who surrendered two doubles and allowed three runs to score and after six; the HiToms trailed 5-3.
Martinsville got a great start from Drew Province (W 1-0) who went six strong innings allowing just three runs while scattering five hits and fanning six.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Mustangs added some insurance as Preston Lyons delivered his third hit of the night, an RBI single to left for the 7-3 lead.
Demarius Johnson allowed the HiToms to threaten in the ninth as they loaded the bases with two outs for Stephen Carmen who struck out to end the game and give the Mustangs at 7-3 opening night win.
The HiToms will open the home portion of their schedule Wednesday night at 7:00 when they welcome the Gastoniza Grizzles to Finch Field, fans attending the game will receive a free Cricket Communications team poster.
