Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kans. - A five-run third inning and a strong start from Jordan Cooper guided the Wichita Wingnuts past the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 6-5 in Tuesday night's exhibition at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Cooper was excellent in his 2018 exhibition debut, tossing three scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed a leadoff hit in the top of the first to Brennan Metzger before retiring the next nine RedHawks he faced.

The Wingnuts offense rewarded that solid start with a big third inning. Logan Watkins and Abel Nieves singled, setting the stage for a Tony Thomas RBI double. Zach Nehrir followed by singling in Nieves and Thomas, then John Nester capped the inning with a two-run home run.

Casey Harman followed Cooper with two scoreless innings, including striking out the side in the fifth.

Fargo-Moorhead rallied for a four-run sixth inning. After a one-out walk, Metzger drove home the first run for the RedHawks with a double. Maikol Gonzalez plated Metzger with a single, and later scored on a two-run double from Tommy Mendonca.

In the seventh, Leo Pina hit a solo homer to left field to pull the RedHawks within one.

James Campbell worked around a two-out single in the eighth, inducing three ground balls to preserve the Wingnuts lead, and Daniel Tillman struck out the side in the ninth to seal the victory for Wichita.

The Wingnuts and RedHawks wrap up the exhibition schedule Wednesday, May 16th at 7:05 PM at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
