Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - The Clippers sent 10 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the fifth to help them stop the Bats' eight-game winning streak, as Louisville fell 11-5. 12,356 fans saw the Bats give up 15 hits and 11 runs.
The Clippers got on the board first in the top of the third when Roger Bernadina singled to score Leonard Davis from second. The RBI for Bernadina was his 13th of the year and made the score 1-0.
The Bats answered in their half inning with a run of their own when Chris Dickerson scored off of an Alvin Colina single to left.
Columbus took the lead again in the fourth after a double by Ray Olmedo allowed Ed Rogers to score, giving the Clippers a 2-1 lead. Once again the Bats would counter in the bottom half. With one out, Shaun Cumberland doubled in Micheal Griffin to tie the game at 2-2.
Griffin finished the game going 3-for-4 with one RBI and two doubles.
The rough fifth inning started off with three consecutive singles by Craig Stammen, Jorge Padilla, and Bernadina. Adam Pettyjohn nearly escaped the jam by striking out the next two batters, but had difficulty getting the third out. Larry Broadway singled in his 50th and 51st RBI's of the season. Ed Rogers then followed with a three-run homer, making the score 7-2. Leonard Davis later connected on a two-run shot which completely opened up the game, 9-2.
The Clippers would add two more in the top of the sixth.
The Bats battled back in the seventh when Drew Anderson hit his 23rd double of the year to drive in Danny Richar and move Colina to third. Colina later scored on a slow grounder by Shaun Cumberland, making the score 11-5. That is as close as the Bats would get in their pursuit for the ninth consecutive victory.
Pettyjohn (12-5, 4.87) struggled for the first time in a while as lost for the first time since July 5th. He entered the game, winning his last five starts with a 1.12 ERA. However, the Clippers got to the lefty with 13 hits, ten earned runs, and two homers in the 5.1 innings pitched.
Columbus' Craig Stammen (1-2, 10.07) shut down the sizzling Bats offense and earned his first victory as a Clipper. Stammen scattered nine hits and allowed three runs in six innings of work.
