Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - The Bulls got the winning run on base with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning but could not manage to score, dropping a 3-2 decision Saturday to the Richmond Braves at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham's magic number remained at 13 with Norfolk leading the Mud Hens 5-2 at press time in an eighth-inning rain delay in Toledo.
Down 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Jonny Gomes singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Chris Richard followed with another single to get the winning run on base. But Elliot Johnson popped out to shortstop Brent Lillibridge and pinch hitter John Jaso grounded into a game-ending double play. Durham struck out a total of 12 times on the evening.
Dale Thayer (3-1, 1.77) took the loss for Durham, going one inning and allowing two hits, a run and a walk. Brad Nelson (2-3, 8.25) got the win in two innings of relief. Jorge Julio pitched the ninth inning to get his sixth save of the year.
Left-hander Heath Phillips (1-0, 3.52) will start for the Bulls Sunday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park as they play their seventh straight game against Richmond. Brian Lawrence (3-5, 5.79) will start for the Braves. First pitch will be at 5:05 p.m.
