Rockford RiverHawks News Release
O'FALLON, Mo. - The RiverHawks let out their frustrations from the past two losses in one inning on Wednesday. That inning was enough to give Rockford a 12-7 victory over the Rascals, salvaging the series finale in River City.
The âHawks broke the game open with seven runs in the fifth inning, breaking a 4-4 tie. With the bases loaded and one out, losing pitcher Derrick Landavazo (0-1) walked Jeremy Busch to force in a run. Landavazo then gave up consecutive RBI singles to Shaff Elkouri, Nick Johnson, Aaron McEachran, and Ashley Farr. Chris DiBlasi drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Brian Baron finished the scoring with an RBI double.
The âHawks scored in each of the first three innings to take an early lead, as they never trailed in the game. Brian Baron's solo shot in the third put Rockford in front 4-0, but River City tied the game with four runs in the fourth, three of them coming on a home run by Zack Riera.
The Rascals hit two more home runs, both of them solo blasts. Justin McKinley went deep in the sixth off starter Justin Olson (5-3) and Kirk McConnell led off the seventh with a homer.
Olson picked up the win for Rockford though he allowed six runs on 10 hits in six innings.
Johnson picked up his first hit as a RiverHawk in the first inning, en route to a 3-for-5 day. Baron was 2-for-3 with three RBI, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. The only time he was retired was when he lined out in the eighth against Jake Manning, a reserve outfielder who pitched three perfect innings.
The RiverHawks return to Marinelli Field Thursday to begin a six-game homestand. It's a Miller "Thirsty Thursday" when beer is just $1. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and the gate opens at 6:05 p.m. The 'Hawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
