Big bats key to a 7-3 Joliet win over Winnipeg

JOLIET-The RF Joe Gaetti (2-4) hit two home runs and 3B Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4) added a bases-clearing triple in the 3rd inning to help the Joliet JackHammers (28-49) to an

8-3 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (46-29) before 4,075 fans at Silver Cross Field on Monday night.

The JackHammers took the early 3-0 lead on a three-run home run by Gaetti in the 1st inning against Winnipeg RHP Mark Michael (2-4). 3B Vince Harrison (2-3) singled and LF Brad Correll (0-2) worked a walk. Gaetti snuck a fly ball inside the left field foul pole for his 4th home run of the season in a 3-0 Joliet lead.

The Goldeyes began chipping away at the lead with two runs in the 2nd inning and one run in the 3rd against Joliet LHP Devin Anderson. 3B Brent Metheny (1-3) led off the 2nd with a walk and stole second base. LF Dee Brown (0-3) was hit by a pitch.

CF Kurt Crowell (1-3) hit an RBI single to score Metheny. Brown moved to third base on the play. Brown scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-2 in favor of the JackHammers.

In the 3rd inning, 2B Josh Asanovich (2-5) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a single by DH Juan Diaz (2-5).

Metheny hit an RBI single to score Asanovich and tie the game at 3-3.

The JackHammers took advantage of some errant pitching to re-gain a three-run led in the 3rd inning. Harrison and Correll received back-to-back walks. After Gaetti struck out looking for the second out of the inning, DH Freddie Thon walked to load the bases.

Backman, Jr. lifted a bases-clearing triple to right center field. The JackHammers went back on top 6-3.

Joliet tacked on an unearned run in the 5th inning. Harrison started the inning by singling. He stole second base and moved to third base on a wild pitch by Winnipeg LHP Zach Baldwin.

Thon hit a ground ball that skipped off the glove of Winnipeg 1B Kevin West to score Harrison and give the JackHammers a 7-3 lead.

Gaetti hit a solo home run in the 8th inning to finish the scoring at 8-3.

RHP Luke O'Loughlin (1-1) worked three and one-thirds scoreless innings to pick up the win.
