Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

ABERDEEN, MD (June 18, 2013) - Offense comes at a premium in the New York-Penn League, make no mistake about it. The old adage that good pitching holds the advantage over good hitting is routinely on display during these summer months. But occasionally, the bats come alive together, and that's usually a problem for the one on the mound. For the Hudson Valley Renegades, it came in a six-run top of the fourth inning at Ripken Stadium, more than enough to secure a 10-5 victory.

A 44-minute rain delay did not seem to affect the IronBirds, who answered quickly off Renegades starter Chris Kirsch with a run each in the first and second. During those two frames, Aberdeen would collect three hits, but Kirsch would only allow one more after that. Hudson Valley later tied the game at two in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Ismel Antunez walked to make it 2-1. Ariel Soriano reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jared Breen that would score Ryan McChesney to tie things up.

The aforementioned fourth inning explosion started with singles by Granden Goeztman and James Harris. Next came back-to-back doubles by Darryl George and designated hitter Ryan McChesney, who combined for three RBIs to give Hudson Valley a 5-2 lead. Later in the inning, McChesney scored on a wild pitch by Birds reliever Janser Severino before an Ariel Soriano triple and a John Alexander single brought in the final two runs to make it 8-2.

At this point, Kirsch (1-0) was in cruise control. From the third inning on, he retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced, including the final nine in a row. Following up on Jordan Harrison's strong six innings the night before, last year's 14th round pick would go the same distance and finish with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Hudson Valley added two more runs in the top of the seventh off Ironbirds reliever Williams Louico on a George groundout and a McChesney single. The last three runs of the night came on one swing by third baseman Hector Veloz in the bottom of the eighth, the first home run for either team this season.

NOTES: The Renegades sent ten batters to the plate in the fourth inning...despite batting ninth, designated hitter Ryan McChesney finished 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored...Goetzman, Harris, George, and McChesney accounted for eight of the Renegades 10 runs...the IronBirds have made five errors through the first two games of this series while the Renegades have not made one.

The final game of this three-game series will begin Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. The Renegades will go for the sweep as they send John Farrell to the mound against IronBirds right-hander Luc Rennie. The Renegades home opener is Friday, June 21, at 7:05 PM against the Staten Island Yankees. Great seats are still available for the 7:05 games on June 24 & 25 against the Brooklyn Cyclones.
