Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Lansing Mich. - In the 100th all-time meeting between the two squads dating back to 2010, Lansing hit Hot Rods' starter Jose Mujica early and often to set the tone for an 11-3 victory on Saturday night in front of 7,871 fans at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Bowling Green (26-28, 63-61) dropped its eighth consecutive game in Lansing and has lost 12 of its last 14 games away from the Commonwealth. Lansing (26-28, 68-56) won its 12th game over the last 13 contests against the Hot Rods and has won consecutive games for the first time since August 7-8 against Beloit since snapping an eight-game losing streak on Friday.

Lansing scored in each of the first four innings against Mujica, starting with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Almonte, who led off the frame with a single into left field, scored on Cristian Toribio's throwing error when D.J. Davis reached on an infield single to give Lansing a 1-0 lead. Ryan McBroom then scored Richard Urena from third on a sacrifice fly to give the Lugnuts a 2-0 lead. However, Hot Rods manager Reinaldo Ruiz was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Aaron Higgins for arguing the safe call at home.

Single runs came for the Lugnuts in the second and third innings, making for a 4-0 edge, before the home squad exploded for four two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth. Davis' two-RBI single scored Austin Davis and Christian Vazquez to give Lansing a 6-0 cushion, while McBroom bashed a two-run home run two pitches later for his 11th of the year, making it 8-0.

Mujica (1-3) was chased after 4.0 innings, allowing a career-high eight runs (seven earned) over 11 hits with two walks and zero strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Bowling Green was unable to solve Lansing's spot-starter Tim Mayza (2-1) over 5.0 shutout innings, as the southpaw gave up just a Coty Blanchard double in the second inning and issued a walk to Blanchard in the fourth, while striking out five in his first start since Aug. 11, 2013.

Success came for the Hot Rods against Lugnut relievers Dusty Isaacs and Phil Kish to avoid the shutout, scoring in three of the final four innings. In the top of the sixth, Riley Unroe knocked a double into left centerfield, and Alec Sole drove Unroe home with his first two-out RBI single for the Hot Rods' first run of the game, 8-1.

Ryan Pennell followed Mujica and set a career-high in innings pitched, going 3.1 frames in relief, surrendering three runs in the seventh and eighth innings over six hits, walking none and striking out two. Pennell was pulled in the bottom of the eighth after a two-run double off the bat of McBroom upping the Lansing lead to 11-2. Utility infielder Carter Burgess entered the fray and retired both batters he faced, marking the second time this season Bowling Green has used a position player in relief, both of which have come at Lansing.

Against Kish in the top of the eighth, Sole knocked his second two-out RBI single, driving home Toribio to bring the Hot Rods within 11-2, while a one-out RBI double Nick Ciuffo in the ninth scored Cade Gotta to make it 11-3, but Toribio grounded out to second base to end the game.

Bowling Green totaled eight hits, with seven players collecting at least one hit, but went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

McBroom recorded a career night, driving home five runs in a 2-for-3 night, while six Lugnuts altogether had multi-hit nights, fashioning a .459 (17-for-37) team average.

Hyrum Formo (4-5, 4.34) looks to help Bowling Green avoid the sweep and snap the eight-game losing streak in Michigan's capital city on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. CDT, opposing Lansing righty Jon Wandling (0-0, 4.50), making his third Midwest League start.
