BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Bethlehem Steel FC announced today that the club has signed midfielder Selmir Miscic (pronunciation: SELL-meer MISS-chich) to his first professional contract. A 15-year-old midfielder from Royersford, Pennsylvania, Miscic becomes the youngest signing in the club's history and the fourth member from the Philadelphia Union Academy to turn professional with Steel FC. The deal is pending league approval.
There will be a media conference call for interested media on Tuesday, September 11 at 3:30 p.m. The call will feature both Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke and midfielder Selmir Miscic who will be available for questions.
The call can be accessed by dialing 800-582-3014 followed by the code 17252609#
"Selmir is a young player from our Academy who has impressed at every level," said Chris Albright, Union Technical Director. "Our mission as a club is to provide opportunities for young players like Selmir to progress and succeed, and he has proven that he is ready for this step. We'd like to congratulate him on his first professional contract and we look forward to helping him develop even further as he starts with Bethlehem Steel FC."
Miscic follows in the footsteps of current Philadelphia Union homegrown products Derrick Jones and Matt Real to progress up the organization's "Path to the Pros" ladder by signing their first professional contracts with Bethlehem Steel FC.
"Selmir is an exciting attacking player who has a lot of potential," added Brendan Burke, Steel FC Head Coach. "His play at the Academy has been exceptional and he has showed well in training at the Steel level. We are delighted that he has chosen to turn professional."
Miscic joins Steel FC after standout performances with the Union Academy and the U.S. Boys' National Team. Last season, he made 26 appearances for the Union U-15s, scoring 33 goals in all competitions. His success has continued in 2018, scoring twice with the Union U-17s.
On the international stage, Miscic guided the U.S. U-15's to a third-place finish at the prestigious Torneo delle Nazioni. Playing across eastern Italy and western Slovenia, Miscic set up the U.S's winning goal against Italy and followed up that performance with goals against Macedonia and Croatia. Miscic is currently reporting for a training camp with the U-16s National Team in Brandenton, Florida which runs from September 12-19.
