May 21, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

Playing their best game of spring training the Calgary Vipers (3-2-1) shutout the extended spring training Seattle Mariners 5-0 at the Mariners minor league complex in Peoria, Arizona. The Vipers were excellent in all three facets of the game led by their pitchers who did not allow a run on only four hits while walking one, striking out eight, and not allowing a single runner to reach second base. Offensively the Snakes faced rehabbing major league pitcher Charlie Haeger and collected 14 hits. Finally for the second straight game Calgary didn't commit an error.

On the mound former major leaguer Troy Cate got the start and was fantastic in tossing six frames giving up no runs on three hits while walking one and striking out four. Out of the bullpen Julian Arballo posted a one, two, three inning with a strikeout, Rob Naegele struck out one in a scoreless frame, and Chris Bodishbaugh fanned two in a three up, three down inning.

At the plate Wilver Perez went three-for-four while Calgary resident Aaron Dunsmore and fellow rookie Bryan Burke both went two-for-two.

Calgary jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jonny Kaplan reached on a fielding error, Perez singled, Sean Boatright doubled in two, and Dunsmore singled in one.

A run was added to the lead in the second inning as Matt Kavanaugh and Jeff Giacomini both hit doubles for a 4-0 score.

After six scoreless innings Calgary grabbed a run in the ninth frame for a 5-0 lead when Burke singled, stole second base, and scored on a Louie Templeton run batted in single.

The Vipers conclude spring training against the Edmonton Capitals on Sunday May 22nd at 12:00 PM MDT.

Calgary starts the 2011 regular season on the road in Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday May 24th with a double-header against Jose Canseco and the Scorpions.

The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.

Season tickets, flex packs, mini packs, and individual game tickets are available for the 48 game Calgary Vipers' home schedule at Foothills Stadium (2255 Crowchild Trail Northwest, 403-277-2255, www.calgaryvipers.com).
