FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 19, 2014) - The Daytona Cubs knocked off the Fort Myers Miracle, 4-2, at Hammond Stadium on Monday morning in front of 2,396 fans on Education Day.

Jose Berrios put together a strong start in a no decision, but a few lapses in command resulted in a pair of runs scored by the Cubs.

In the first, Berrios walked the lead-off hitter Pin-Chieh Chen, then surrendered a double to Zeke DeVoss. With runners at second and third, Berrios got a swinging strikeout of Albert Amora, but the pitch eluded catcher Jairo Rodriguez and Chen scored from third. Berrio rallied to get the final three outs, fanning the final two.

The score would sit at 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Jorge Polanco coaxed a walk from Cubs reliever Nathan Dorris. A ground out to second from Dalton Hicks moved Polanco to second. On a 1-2 pitch with two outs, Travis Harrison hit a sharp ground ball to the left side hole that bounced over the glove of a diving Marco Hernandez. Polanco trotted home to tie the game, 1-1.

In the seventh and final inning for Berrios, the Cubs regained the lead. Wilson Contreras picked up a one-out single on the infield and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hernandez flew out to center, but Chen doubled a 2-1 pitch into left center to bring in Contreras.

The Miracle rallied again in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Gonzales worked a one-out walk and Jairo Rodriguez followed with a base hit through the left side. then, Jonathan Murphy doubled into right center to score Gonzales. Getting to the ball in center, Almora found the cut-off Tim Saunders. Rodriguez rounded third and Suanders unleashed a one-hop bullet to home plate to punch out Rodriguez trying to score.

Berrios day finished after seven innings and 10 strikeouts, setting a new individual-best for Miracle pitcher this season. Berrios allowed two runs on five hits and walked three.

Brian Gilbert entered out of the Miracle bullpen in the eighth. Almora singled to start the inning. After a fly out to left from Dan Vogelbach, Jeimer Candelario hit a high pop fly on the infield. Harrison raced in from third, but the ball bounced off his mitt for an error.

Rodriguez gunned down Almora at third in an attempted steal for the second out. With runners at first and second, Saunders hit a grounder to third that was also misplayed by Harrison and put runners on the corners.

On an 0-2 pitch, Contreras lined a pitch from Gilbert (0-1) into right field for a two-run base hit and supplied the Cubs with a 4-2 lead.

Dorris (1-0) earned the win in 2.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits. Austin Reed recorded the final four outs for his second save of the series and season.
