Berhalter Hopes Crew SC Can Carry Progression through off Week
March 17, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release
Two weeks into the 2015 MLS Regular Season, Crew SC takes a break from action before its next match against the New York Red Bulls on Match 28 at MAPFRE Stadium (TICKETS ). While Gregg Berhalter is indifferent to not having a match this week, saying "it is what it is," the Crew SC Sporting Director and Head Coach believes there is progress can be made in the next 11 days.
Berhalter is happy with the improvements he saw in his side's win over Toronto FC, but feels there is still work to do within his system before facing the Red Bulls.
"We've seen a progression from Houston to Toronto," Berhalter said Tuesday. "In terms of how we played, I think it improved. Now we want to continue taking those last two games, and taking where we left off in preseason, just improving and getting better, working on some details of it."
"[The play] got better against Toronto, but it's still not all the way there. It's still not where it needs to be."
Without a match coming this weekend, it also gives the Black & Gold a chance to improve their fitness with 32 matches remaining in the grueling MLS campaign.
"It's a week for conditioning where when you have a game, you can't really do that much because you're worried about the fatigue," Berhalter noted. "We're going to do some conditioning this week."
An off week can also breed positives off the field as well. Berhalter hopes the bye week can re-charge his players following a busy preseason training regimen.
"The guys get a weekend off. It's been a long preseason. We'll do a hard week of training, and then they get to live like normal humans on the weekend," he said with a laugh.
"It'll be pretty good... Watch some basketball, watch some soccer. Just relax."
