BERGREN LEADS SLIDERS TO SERIES SWEEP OVER BOMBERS

July 6, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release

Led by RF Jake Bergren, the Springfield Sliders' offense was rolling early and often as they picked up a 16-12 win over the Dubois County Bombers to sweep the two game series at Robin Roberts Stadium tonight. The Sliders had a great start to the game as they scored seven runs in the very first inning. The scoring started with an RBI single by 1B Reagan Fowler. 3B Jake Ingold then walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run, Bergren hit a grand slam, and SS Matt Highland hit an RBI double to score C Connor Dunn who had tripled. The Bombers would erase the deficit and even take an 8-7 lead briefly, with two runs in the third and six in the fourth. The Bombers' lead would not last long, as the Sliders scored four in the fourth. DH Matt Tellor scored on a wild pitch, and then Ingold hit an opposite field three run home run, giving the Sliders a lead they would not relinquish. In the fifth, 2B Michael Hurwitz led off with a single, giving every Sliders' starter at least one hit. Hurwitz would later come around to score on an error, and LF Matt Stevens hit an RBI single to score CF Wade Rothermich, making it 13-8 Sliders. It became 14-8 when Bergren hit his second home run of the night, this time a solo shot, in the sixth. The Sliders' final two runs came in the seventh inning when Fowler hit his second RBI single of the game, and Bergren hit a sacrifice fly for his sixth RBI of the night. Dubois County would make it interesting with four runs in the ninth, but the Sliders' bullpen was able to slam the door on any comeback hopes. The win, which was picked by reliever David Frank, is the Sliders' third straight against the Bombers this season, after the Bombers won the first five in the season series. The Sliders will be on road for the next three days, as they visit the Terre Haute Rex. First pitch for the first game of the series tomorrow night is at 7:05 CT, and the game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel.
