Sliders Beat Bombers 11-10 in 13 Innings

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Springfield Sliders scored a pair in the ninth to force extra innings then Mathew Tellor hit a home run that the won game for Springfield in the thirteenth, beating the Dubois County Bombers 11-10 at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Ill.

TR Dunne earned the win, throwing four scoreless innings of relief and allowing only two hits while striking out six.

John Rashid took the loss for Dubois County, pitching three innings of two-hit ball but surrendering Tellor's shot.

Neither starter made it through the fifth inning. The Bombers' Spencer Sapp was touched up for six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two in four and two-thirds innings, and Springfield's Cody Repenning lasted only four innings as he allowed eight runs on 11 hits and a walk to go with a pair of strikeouts.

Mike Fitzgerald Jr. made it 1-0, Springfield, in the second with his eighth home run of the year, but the Bombers responded with three in the third.

After the Sliders trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, Dubois County exploded for a five-run fourth to lead 8-2 after four innings.

But the Sliders' bullpen stanched the bleeding and allowed only two Bombers runs through the rest of regulation.

John White pitched the fifth and sixth innings, allowing one run, and on came Rob McDonnell. McDonnell pitched the next three innings, allowing only one run, and then Dunne worked his magic in extra innings.

The Bombers' bullpen didn't fare so well.

Ryan Billo recorded the final out of the fifth and worked the sixth and the seventh, surrendering a pair in the seventh to narrow the Bombers' lead to 9-8.

In came Nick Green to attempt another multiple-inning save, and he pitched a scoreless eighth. Things looked promising for Dubois County when Chris Tavares hit a solo shot to give Dubois County its tenth run in the top of the ninth.

But then Sliders catcher Mathew Stevens hit a two-out, two-run home run off Green that scored himself and David Kerian, who had and reached on an error to start the innings, to send the game into extras locked at 10.

The game remained scoreless until Tellor homered on the second pitch he saw from Rashid in the bottom of the thirteenth.

Zach Long and Ryan Simmons made their first starts of the year at third base and shortstop, respectively, for the Bombers. Long went 2-for-6 with 2 runs-batted-in while Simmons went hitless in four at-bats.

The two teams battle again Friday night at 7:35 in Springfield.
