
Bergolla Falls Homer Shy of Cycle in Threshers' Loss

CLEARWATER, FL - William Bergolla smacked two extra-base hits in a game for the first time in his career, but the Clearwater Threshers (65-32, 21-11) couldn't overcome a six-run first inning from the Lakeland Flying Tigers (49-48, 23-9) in a 10-6 loss on Wednesday night at BayCare Ballpark. The Threshers look to get back to their winning ways in a Thursday night tilt against Lakeland at home in Clearwater.
A six-run first inning was capped by a two-run homer from Manuel Sequera as the Lakeland Flying Tigers to a big early lead. Bergolla led off the game for the Threshers with a double to right and advanced to third on a single by Bryan Rincon. He scored when Jordan Viars reached on an error by Sequera at second to put the Threshers on the board behind 6-1.
Ty Penner got his first hit on the first pitch he saw but was out on a fielder's choice hit by Troy Schreffler. After a single by Bergolla Justin Crawford ripped a double down the right field line to plate Schreffler and make it 6-2. A wild pitch by Lakeland starter Carlos Marcano cut the deficit to 6-3 for the Threshers.
Lakeland added two more runs on a double by Mike Rothenberg in the fifth to bring their lead back to five at 8-3. They added another run in the sixth on an RBI single to extend their lead to six at 9-3. Bergolla tripled with one out in the seventh off Flying Tigers reliever Quinn Gudaitis. He scored on an infield single by Crawford that cut the Lakeland lead to 9-4.
After Chad Castillo was hit by a pitch from Lakeland reliever Chris Mauloni, Ryan Leitch drilled a two-out two-run home run to right field to put the Threshers back within three at 9-6. A bases-loaded walk added another run for the Flying Tigers in the top of the ninth, finishing the game with a 10-6 defeat over the Threshers.
Samuel Aldegheri allowed six runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout in 0.2 innings. Braeden Fausnaught allowed two runs on two hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in 4.1 frames. Eiberson Castellano surrendered one run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts in six innings of work. Yoniel Ramirez struck out three but walked two and allowed one run on two hits in the ninth.
Fausnaught's outing was the longest by a Threshers reliever in 2023...He tied Danny Wilkinson for the most strikeouts by a reliever with a career-high eight strikeouts...Castellano struck out a career-high six...He tied his season high in innings pitched with three innings pitched in back-to-back outings...Crawford and Bergolla each have five hits in the first two games of the series...Bergolla scored three runs, matching the mark for the most in a game by a Thresher this season...Crawford's two RBIs put him in a tie with Felix Reyes with a team-leading 49 RBIs...The Threshers continue their six-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Thursday, August 3 at BayCare Ballpark...
