Columbus Wardogs News Release
Columbus, GA - For the second time in three weeks, Columbus Wardogs receiver Troy Bergeron has been named the league's "Offensive Player of the Week" after scoring seven of the team's nine touchdowns in Saturday's 63-61 loss at Louisville.
The former Shaw High standout caught 14 passes for 216 yards and six touchdowns, all single game records for Columbus. His 216 receiving yards broke the team record of 212 yards which he set on June 19 versus Macon. The 20-year-old rookie, who is the youngest player in af2 history, also returned a kickoff 56-yards for a touchdown against the Fire, marking the first kickoff returned for a score by Columbus this year.
In his last four games, Bergeron has caught 46 passes for 698 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is averaging 174.5 yards per game during that stretch and is quickly becoming one of the leading candidates for af2 Rookie of the Year honors.
Bergeron and the Wardogs (6-7) will continue their playoff push this Saturday, July 17 at Peoria against the Pirates (7-6). Columbus trails Memphis by one game in the battle for the final playoff spot in the American Conference. Saturday's game can be heard on Boomer 95.3 FM beginning at 7:45pm ET.
