Benn Brothers, Olympian Adam Kreek to Throw Friday's First Pitches

July 30, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release

The Victoria HarbourCats are pleased to announce that three special guests will be on hand on Friday night to throw out the ceremonial first pitches on THE EDGE FOOD ENERGY COMPANY GAME NIGHT.

It's only fitting that two Olympians, NHL star Jamie Benn and gold-medallist rower Adam Kreek, along with Dallas Stars forward Jordie Benn, will be on-hand to help get the HarbourCats' game against the Bellingham Bells under way. The scheduled first pitch for that game will be at 7:11pm at Sports Traders Diamond at Royal Athletic Park.

Kreek is a member of the board of THE EDGE FOOD ENERGY, an Island-based company that produces high quality all-organic portable nutrition. Also throwing out a first pitch will be Matthew Traynor of The Edge Food Energy.

"This is an exciting announcement for us to make, to have two Olympic gold medalists on our field -- and we expect a rousing ovation and a lot of interest in seeing them throw out our ceremonial first pitches on Friday," said General Manager Jim Swanson.

"Jamie, Jordie and Adam are proud Victorians and we're so glad to have them join us that night. I know the sponsor is quite excited to be part of an evening like this as well."

Jamie Benn was Canada's best player in Sochi as Canada won the gold medal in men's hockey this past winter. Kreek was part of a men's eights squad that grabbed gold in Beijing in 2008. Jordie Benn (and his beard!) has become an NHL stalwart after playing for the Peninsula Panthers, Victoria Salsa/Grizzlies and Victoria Salmon Kings on his way to the NHL.

The HarbourCats currently lead the West Coast League in attendance with an average of 1,516 fans per game, and have six home games remaining -- this Friday and Saturday evening, and Sunday afternoon, and the season-capping series the next weekend, Friday/Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon. Tickets are available through www.harbourcats.com/tickets, or at the gate, or through the team office at 1814 Vancouver Street.

The HarbourCats are in Wenatchee tonight to play the second game of a three-game set against the Applesox.

Saturday's game is Mascotlandia, sponsored by Rifflandia, and will mark the birthday of Harvey the HarbourCat, with all his local mascot friends out to help him celebrate.
