Elks Drop First Game in Corvallis 8-7

July 30, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

The Bend Elks fell to the Corvallis Knights Tuesday night 8-7 at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. Elks starter Jake Thompson got off to a rough start giving up 7 earned runs in the 4.1 innings he was on the mound. After the Knights took a 7-4 run lead in the bottom of the 5th, the Elks fought back by plating 3 runs in the top of the 7th, including a 2 run monster home run to left field by Brock Carpenter to tie the score at 7. Closer Kevin Sheets came in at the bottom of the 7 to relieve Michael Bennett with 2 outs. He gave up a double to the first Knight he faced. The runner then advanced to 3rd on a fielders choice before Sheets threw a wild pitch that allowed the go ahead run cross the plate. Sheets was tagged with his first loss of the session. The loss puts the Elks 2 games behind the first place Knights in the WCL South Division with five more games to be played against the Knights. Two more this week, and three more games next week, also in Corvallis. The Wenatchee AppleSox defeated the Victoria Harbour Cats tonight, that along with the Elks loss puts the Applesox 3 games behind the Elks for the wildcard spot for the playoffs. Game two is set to start at 6:40 PM Wednesday evening from Goss Stadium in Corvallis and can be heard live at bendelks.com.
