RIO RANCHO, NM - In another tightly contested game at the Santa Ana Star Center, the Corpus Christi IceRays got a third period game-winning goal from Michael Benedict and recorded a two-game sweep over the New Mexico Mustangs, 2-1, on Friday night. With the win, Corpus Christi is now 9-11-2 (20 points) while the Mustangs slip to 5-16-2 (12 points) overall.
Beau Walker had a goal and an assist and Pheonix Copley was strong once again in between the pipes for the IceRays,
The first period went scoreless, with neither team able to gain an advantage. Corpus Christi had the best opportunity of the frame, but Bryan Jones made an impressive glove save off the stick of Joey Parizek. Shots were 9-5 in favor of the IceRays.
Corpus Christi potted the first goal of the game of the power play, when Walker (8) banged home a carom from a Colton Saucerman shot from the blue line at the 8:33 mark. The lead did not last long though, as Joe Smereck (6) wristed a hard shot from the slot past Copley, 9:28 into the period, tying the game at 1-1. The score remained that way through the end of the period with New Mexico outshooting Corpus Christi, 13-10.
The IceRays' leading goal-scorer, Benedict (11) tallied the game-winning goal, 6:26 into the third period, as he squeaked a shot through the pads of Jones. Walker and Jake Diamond assisted on the goal. Penalties marred the remainder of the third period which resulted in a six-on-four for the Mustangs at the end of regulation with the netminder pulled, but Copley saved his best for last and preserved the victory for Corpus Christi.
