July 7, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
Bend snapped their scoreless inning streak at 10, putting 2 runs across in the top of the 2nd inning and 2 in the top of the 4th, holding on with quality pitching down the stretch to earn a 4-2 victory over the Medford Rogues on Saturday.
For Bend, it was Chase Fields and Derek Dixon that did the damage at the plate, combining to go 6-10 with 6 of the Elks 8 hits and drove in all 4 runs as Bend (19-10) scored 2 runs in the 2nd and 4th to get back in the win column after falling in Friday's game.
The Elks snapped a 10 scoreless inning streak with 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning as Cullen O'Dwyer singled and Curtis Wildung walked to put men at 1st and 2nd with nobody out. After JD Larimer grounded out and Landon Cray struck out, Chase Fields delivered a 2 run single to give Bend the early 2-0 lead.
Medford responded with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 4th inning as Matt Taylor and Connor George drew back to back walks and Spencer Smith singled to load the bases with one away. Colin Sowers then came to the plate and delivered a 2 run single to tie the game at 2.
The game stayed there until the top of the 4th inning as Landon Cray singled and came around to score from first on the RBI double from Fields, his second hit of the game, to give the Elks a 3-2 lead. After Seth Spivey struck out for out number 2, Derek Dixon singled home to Fields, and Bend lead the game 4-2 the rest of the way.
The Elks bullpen turned in another fine performance the rest of the way against Medford (10-14) as Adam Grantham, Brady Baker, David Murrillo, and Tanner Ring combined to pitch 5 scoreless innings of relief after Hunter Raley started and pitched the first 4, earning a no decision.
Raley battled in his start on Saturday, surrendering 2 runs on 3 hits, but struggled with command, as it was the 5 walks he issued that created the problems and lead to Hunter's early exit from the game. The 2 runs were also the first runs that Raley, a left handed pitcher from Murray State College allowed to score against him in the 2013 summer, as he had not yielded a run in his first 15 innings of work in an Elks uniform.
The Elks and Rogues will play the rubber match of the 3 game series on Sunday, first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
