Bend Capitalizes on Pippins Pitching Woes for 17-10 Win

YAKIMA, Washington -- Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.
Unfortunately for Yakima Valley Pippins pitchers Saturday night, they weren't the windshield.
For the first time on the young season, the Pippins scored in double-digits, but it was in a losing effort as the Bend Elks plated 17 - including 15 through the fourth and fifth innings - en route to a 17-10 victory over the Pippins at Yakima County Stadium.
The Elks, who captured the series by also winning Friday night, pounded out 16 hits.
Trailing 2-0 in the second, the Pippins pushed across five runs and led 5-2 through three innings. But Bend scored eight in the fourth and, after the Pippins scored four of their own in that frame, put up seven more runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach for good.
Hank Dunn reached base safely in four of his six plate appearance, including three walks. Mike Woodward and Caleb Millikan each had two hits for the Pippins, and Dunn, Millikan and Tommy Eisenstat each scored twice.
But four of the five Pippins pitchers in the game combined to walk 13 Bend batters and plunked two more. That, combined with some soft, well-placed hits, kept the Elks circling the basepaths.
Twelve of the Elks' 17 runs were earned.
The Pippins conclude their series with Bend at 6:05 p.m. today before wrapping up the seven-game homestand with a 10:35 a.m. Monday game against the Redmond Dudes on Kids Day.
