Alexandria Beetles News Release
Alexandria, MN - Despite building leads of 1-0, 4-2 and 6-5, the Beetles (12-22) were unable to hold off the Willmar Stingers (20-14) who scored seven unanswered runs in the final three innings to knock off Alexandria 12-6.
Hunter Dozier, Michael Suchy, Dillon Haupt and Kenny Roberts, three through six in the Willmar batting order, combined for 12 hits against Beetle starter Jon Reed and the Alexandria bullpen as the Stingers won for the third time in four games against the Beetles.
Alexandria led 1-0 after a first inning single from Matt Beaty as he continued his hot stretch extending his hit streak to seven.
Three singles in the top of the second scored two for Willmar before the Beetles put a three-spot on the board in the third with four consecutive two-out hits. Jimmy Pickens singled to right and was doubled home by Beaty. Will Fulmer, in his return from a hamstring injury, doubled home Beaty and came in to score himself on Josh Guerra's single to left.
But that lead too was short-lived as back-to-back homeruns from Haupt and Roberts leading off the fourth tied the game. Down 5-4 entering the bottom of the fifth, Pickens tripled-home Ben Moore to bring the game back to stalemate and was driven home on a Beaty sacrifice fly, Beaty's third RBI of the day.
That was the last time that Alexandria would score as the Beetle bullpen was unable to hold the advantage. Three relievers allowed a combined seven hits, four walks, and four wild pitches over the final three innings as Willmar scored four in the seventh, one in the eighth and two more in the ninth to win going away.
Dylan Raper extended his hitting streak to 13 games and Fulmer extended his on-base streak to 20 in the loss, though Tanner Vavra had his 14-game hitting streak snapped on a diving catch by Willmar centerfielder Brady Anderson in the ninth.
The Beetles and Stingers conclude their five-game series and the first half of the Northwoods season at 3:05 Wednesday from Knute Nelson.
