Salt Lake Bees News Release
The two hottest teams in the Pacific Coast League will collide this week as the Salt Lake Bees (44-49) and the Reno Aces (52-41) open a six-game series tonight in Nevada.
The Bees are winners of seven of their last 10 and have won two consecutive series for the first time since May 17-29. They are coming off of taking two out of three from the Tacoma Rainiers over Pioneer Weekend, thanks to a 12-inning comeback win on Sunday. It was their first win when trailing in the ninth inning and just their third extra innings win of the season.
Kean Wong hit .333 (3-for-9) in the series and provided the game-winning, walk-off hit in the 12th inning on Sunday. Monte Harrison went 4-for-7 in his first two games back with the Bees after joining the Angels on June 24. Jake Gatewood and David MacKinnon both hit home runs on Sunday, the only Salt Lake home runs of the series.
The Salt Lake pitching staff continues to be the best in the PCL, posting a 4.76 ERA through 93 games. They lead the league in shutouts with five and are one of two teams to have given up less than 100 home runs. They also lead the league in WHIP with a 1.38 and have issued the fewest number of walks in the league at 324. Bees starting pitchers have put up a 4.39 ERA, lowest in the PCL, and have pitched a league-high 454.2 innings.
Jose Rojas owns the second-longest active hitting streak in all of Triple-A baseball. He has hit safely in each of his last 13 games, hitting .375 (21-for-56) during that time. This comes on the heels of tying the longest RBI streak in all of affiliated baseball (MLB & MiLB), when he knocked in a run in 11-straight games from July 4 to July 16.
David MacKinnon returned to the Salt Lake lineup on Sunday and extended his 28-game on-base streak and six-game hitting streak. His on-base streak is the second-longest active streak in the PCL and Triple-A, trailing only Drew Avans of Oklahoma City. MacKinnon is hitting .380 with an on-base percentage of .472 and an OPS of 1.259 during his 28-game streak.
The Aces are the hottest team in all of Triple-A baseball, having won 11 of their last 12 games and going 13-5 in the month of July. They are coming off of a three-game sweep of the El Paso Chihuahuas, who own the best offense in the PCL.
Outfielder Stone Garrett leads the PCL in home runs (25), RBI (84), and extra-base hits (47). He is ranked fourth in slugging percentage with a .609 and fifth in OPS, posting a .964 so far in 2022. Garrett hit .466 (7-for-15) in the series against El Paso with three home runs and 12 runs batted in.
The Aces' roster features seven of the Diamondbacks' top prospects including their No. 1 overall prospect outfielder Corbin Carroll. Ryne Nelson (No. 4), Drey Jameson (No. 5), and Tommy Henry (No. 13) are all set to make starts in the series while No. 10 infielder Seth Beer, No. 16 RHP Luis Frias, and No. 17 outfielder Dominic Fletcher will all make appearances throughout the series.
The Bees and the Aces will play the series opener tonight at 7:35 p.m. Mountain time (6:35 p.m. local time) in Reno.
