Burlington Bees News Release
Clinton, IA (July 19, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (15-11, 49-47) scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning on their way to an 11-5 victory over the Clinton LumberKings (12-14, 50-46) at Alliant Energy Field tonight. The win completed the Bees first series sweep of the season and extended the team's season-high winning streak to six in a row. The Bees now lead the season series 8-7 over the LumberKings.
The LumberKings got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Brandon Cashman, Tug Hulett, and Brandon Boggs collected three consecutive doubles and Emerson Frostad singled to drive in the final run. Those were the only runs allowed through six innings by Bees' starter Patrick Green. Green (5-7) has won consecutive decisions for the first time this year.
The Bees responded to the LumberKing rally with their own in the top of the fourth against starter Michael Schlact. With one out, Geraldo Valentin walked and stole second. With two outs, Eddie Solis singled to left and Valentin scored to get the Bees on the board. Cody Cure singled and Irving Falu walked to load the bases. Ed Lucas bounced a 1-2 pitch back through the middle to drive in two and tie the game. Damaso Epsino, already 2-2 in the game, grounded a base hit down the third base line to drive in Falu and the Bees led 4-3. Rusty Brown shot a double down the right field line to drive in Lucas and move Espino to third. It was Brown's second double of the ballgame. That knocked Schlact (7-5) out of the game and Kea Kometani took over. Kometani threw a wild pitch to bring in Espino for the Bees' sixth run before getting out of the inning.
The Bees added another run in the fifth. Valentin drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out triple by Cure into the right field corner. It was Cure's first professional triple. Kometani allowed one more unearned run in the sixth. Lucas led off with an infield single. With one out, Brown hit a chopper back to the mound, but Kometani threw wide to second and everyone was safe. Valentin lined a two-out single to center to drive in Lucas to extend the Bees' lead to 8-3. Josh Giles made his Midwest League debut in the seventh and walked the first three batters he faced to load the bases. Falu drove in a run with a slow groundball to third and Espino set a season-high with his fourth hit to drive in two and put the Bees ahead 11-3. Eleven runs ties a season-high for the Bees.
Mark Reynolds and John Lujan each worked a scoreless inning to finish the game for Clinton. Gabe DeHoyos worked a perfect seventh for the Bees. Kraig Schambough allowed a hit and a walk and struck out one in a scoreless eighth. The LumeberKings closed the gap with two unearned runs in the ninth against Chad Blackwell. The Bees committed two errors in the inning.
The Bees are off tomorrow and return home to start a four-game series with the Kane County Cougars on Thursday night. Justin Sherman (2-3, 2.43) will start for the Bees. The gates will open at 6:00 for a Fat Tuesdays Thirsty Thursday featuring 2-for-$3 specials on 20oz. bottles of Pepsi products and 12oz. cans of beer throughout the game. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
