
Bees Score 12 Runs in Playoff Opener

Burlington, IA (September 9, 2009) - The Burlington Bees defeated Kane County 12-7 Wednesday night at Community Field in game one of the Midwest League playoffs. Jason Taylor had three hits, three runs and four RBI while Ivor Hodgson pitched six innings without allowing an earned run to lead the Bees to victory.
The Bees took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Patrick Norris led the inning off with a single and then with two outs, Jason Taylor hit a homerun to left field to put the Bees up by a score of 2-0. They added to the lead with four more runs in the second inning. Jose Bonilla led the inning off with a solo homerun. Jason Morales then singled and scored on a Ryan Wood double. After one out was recorded, Norris singled to score Ryan Wood. Adrian Ortiz then singled, which moved Norris to third. David Wood hit into an RBI ground-out, which scored Norris and the Bees led 6-0.
Kane County got on the scoreboard scoring two unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Bees then answered with three more run in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Ortiz singled, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. David Wood then walked to put runners at the corner. Jason Taylor picked up his second two RBI as he doubled to both Ortiz and David Wood. Taylor then scored on a Shawn Griffin base-hit, which gave the Bees a 9-2 lead.
The Bees scored one more run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Morales singled and move to third on an error. With one out, Norris hit a sacrifice fly to score Morales. In the sixth, Taylor led the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a ground-out. Taylor then scored on a two-out Morales single and the Bees led 11-2.
Kane County scored five runs in the top of the seventh to cut their deficit to four runs. The Bees scored the final run of the game in the eighth inning. Taylor led the inning off with a single and was replaced on the bases by Bonilla who reached on a Fielder's Choice. Bonilla was forced to third after Morales was hit by a pitch and Ryan Wood walked. Yeldrys Molina then singled to score Bonilla, which gave the Bees the 12-7 lead, which was the final margin of victory.
Hodgson got the start for the Bees and was very good. In six innings, he allowed just two unearned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Justin Garcia recorded just one out allowing five runs on four hits and a walk. James Thompson pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing just three hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Bees outhit Kane County 16-10. Ortiz had four hits while both Taylor and Morales had three hits. Taylor led the team with four RBI while Norris had two. Taylor also scored three runs while Norris, Bonilla and Morales each scored two.
The Bees can win the series with a victory Thursday night at Kane County. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30. Tim Melville is the scheduled starter for the Bees. If the Bees win this series, they would play at home again on Saturday night against the winner of the Peoria/Cedar Rapids series. Cedar Rapids won game one 6-4 in ten innings Wednesday night in Peoria.
