Bees Late Game Rally Falls Short As Rockers Hang On For The Victory
(New Britain, CT) - The High Point Rockers (18-13, 59-43) defeated the New Britain Bees (10-19, 45-53) 8-6 at New Britain Stadium on Monday evening in the opener of a four-game series between Liberty Division foes. The win for the visitors was their first in franchise history at New Britain Stadium in four tries.
New Britain starting pitcher Akeel Morris (3-3) suffered the loss after surrendering six runs on six hits (one home run) in five innings pitched in the first appearance versus his former ballclub, walking two while striking out three. High Point starting pitcher Dominic DeMasi (6-2) picked up the win by firing six scoreless innings on three hits allowed, walking and striking out three in the process. Trevor Frank retired all three batters he faced for his team-leading 12th save of the season.
High Point sent eight batters to the plate against Morris in the top half of the third inning, scoring five times to jump out in front 5-0, highlighted by a run-scoring single produced by Matt Jones and a two-out, grand slam home run off the bat of Richie Shaffer. Trailing 7-0 in the last of the seventh, New Britain was finally able to break their scoring drought in a big way, plating five runs which got them to within 7-5 thanks to an RBI base knock from Logan Moore that allowed Ryan Jackson to cross the plate after he led off the frame with a clean single, and back-to-back home runs by Bijan Rademacher and Jason Rogers as Rademacher launched a three-run jack to right centerfield for his 12th four-bagger on the campaign, while Rogers lifted a solo tater to left centerfield, his 9th roundtripper and 65th rib-eye steak, good for fourth most in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball in runs driven home. The Bees cut the deficit to 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth when Jackson plated Jonathan Galvez with a sacrifice fly after Galvez belted a leadoff triple off the wall to the opposite field in right. The Rockers got some much needed insurance in the ninth with Shaffer doing the honors once again as the cleanup batter tallied his second big fly of the evening to double the advantage to 8-6 while giving Shaffer five runs batted in on the night. The late comeback fell just short as Frank shut the door for his third save in four tries against the boys from the Hardware City in 2019. Jackson led the way offensively with two hits in the defeat.
