Portland Beavers News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Terry Evans hit a decisive two-run homer and Chris Pettit added two hits, including an RBI double, in a 4-3 victory, and Pettit tallied two more doubles and two more RBIs to take the nightcap, 5-3, as the Salt Lake Bees swept the Portland Beavers in a doubleheader at Spring Mobile Ballpark Monday night.
Pettit was 5-for-6 on the night, with three doubles and three RBIs for the Bees, who have won three in a row and gained a share of first place in the Pacific North.
In the first game, Bees starter Mike MacDonald (2-1) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings to pick up the victory.
Matt Buschmann (1-2) pitched a six-inning complete game for the Beavers (10-9), but gave up four runs on six hits and three walks.
In game one, Kevin Howard collected a pair of singles while Josh Alley knocked a double and an RBI single in three at-bats for the Beavers, who have lost the first three games of the series to fall to 0-3 in the division.
With the Bees clinging to a 2-1 lead in the fifth, Evans connected on a two-run shot to left, which proved to be the difference in the ballgame.
The Beavers had their best opportunity of the contest when with one out in the sixth, Portland got four straight hits from the top four batters in the order but scored just one run in the frame, after both Kyle Blanks and Chad Huffman struck out with the bases loaded to end the threat.
Portland scored another run in the seventh on Alley's RBI single, but Jeremy Hill stranded him on first for his fourth save of the year.
In the second game, Pettit was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two doubles in support of Francisco Rodriguez (2-0), who lowered his ERA to 0.84 by tossing two scoreless innings in relief of starter Brad Salmon.
Mike Ekstrom (1-1), making his first start of the season, took the loss for the Beavers, surrendering five runs on four hits and three walks in just two innings of work.
Alley had his second two-hit game of the night and Kyle Blanks added two hits, including his third home run of the season, for the Beavers, who were swept in a doubleheader for the first time since May 11, 2008, when they lost both games at Iowa.
Portland was able to chip one run off the five-run deficit in the third on Eliezer Alfonzo's second home run on the year.
The Beavers then got within two in the seventh when Blanks hit a deep two-home run to left-center, cutting the lead to 5-3. But for the second straight game, the Beavers' comeback never came to fruition as Matt Wilhite retired the next three batters to end the game.
The Beavers and Bees wrap up their four-game series tomorrow night at 5:35 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: The doubleheader was scheduled after yesterday's game was postponed due to rain ... the Beavers threw out four Bee base runners in the first game with a pickoff, a caught stealing and two outfield assists ... the Bees stranded just one runner in game one ... Portland pitcher Gabe DeHoyos extended his scoreless streak to 17.2 innings, dating back to last season with Class AA San Antonio, with two shutout frames in the second game ... Alfonzo extended his hit streak to seven games with his home run in the second game.
