Bees Drop Series Opener to Blue Crabs in Extras

New Britain Bees News Release

(New Britain, CT)- Despite another late inning comeback to force extra innings, the New Britain Bees dropped the series opener at New Britain Stadium to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 6-5 in 11 innings.

The Bees fought off a sluggish start over the first six innings to fight back from an early deficit. Down 4-0 in the seventh, the Bees put together a three-run rally highlighted by a two-run double by Jon Jones and RBI single by Steve Carrillo, who celebrated his 29th birthday by extending his hitting streak to ten games.

After the Bees tied the game at four in the eighth (Michael Crouse RBI infield single), the Blue Crabs went back ahead in the ninth on an error by third baseman Jovan Rosa. New Britain, however, would still not go quietly as James Skleton launched a two-out solo home run off Southern Maryland closer Cody Eppley to knot the game once again and send it into extras.

The Bees would not be able to take advantage of a game-ending scoring opportunity in the tenth with runners on first and third and two out, and it would come back to bite them in the very next half inning. With two on and two out, the Blue Crabs' Michael Snyder drove home Steve Lombardozzi with a sharp single to center, providing the Blue Crabs with the eventual game-winner.

The Bees and Blue Crabs will continue their three-game series tomorrow night at 6:35PM from New Britain Stadium. Right-hander Shawn Haviland will take the mound for New Britain, while Tim Sexton will get the nod for Southern Maryland. Also, the first 1,000 fans in attendance at tomorrow's ballgame will receive the second of six 2016 collector's pins.
