Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgewater, NJ) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (14-27) were defeated by the Somerset Patriots (24-18) 5-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday night as the reigning Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Champions take the opener of a three game weekend series in the Garden State. The Patriots have now won three of the five head to head regular season meetings between the two clubs in 2016.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Mike Antonini (3-5) was tagged with the hard luck loss, tossing six innings, allowing just one run on six hits, walking two and striking out one. The Bluefish southpaw registered his fourth consecutive quality start and fifth in his last six appearances overall, most of any starter on the Bridgeport staff. Antonini has surrendered just six earned runs in his last 35 innings pitched, lowering his ERA to 2.58. Somerset Starting Pitcher Scott McGregor (3-4) earned the victory, giving up just one unearned run on seven hits in seven and two-third innings of work, striking out three while not walking a batter.
Somerset got on the board first in the home half of the third inning against Antonini on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matt Fields, plating Mycal Jones after he led off the frame with a base knock. Antonini would limit the damage to just that single run when he induced Trayvon Robinson to ground out to second baseman Luis Rodriguez as the home team would strand a pair of baserunners. The Patriots would add a pair of insurance runs off Bluefish reliever R.J. Hively in the bottom half of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 3-0 on an RBI double by Jones and a wild pitch thrown by Hively.
Bridgeport picked up their lone run in the eighth inning off McGregor on a run scoring single by Welington Dotel, plating Anthony Giansanti after he reached base on a throwing error by third baseman Eric Farris, and the 'Fish were down a pair as the Patriots lead was cut to 3-1. In the next half inning Somerset would take their largest lead of the night at 5-1 on a pair of unearned runs off Scott Shuman. Scott Kelly's RBI double and Jones' RBI single gave the Patriots a four run cushion. Jon Hunton retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out one as the boys from Bridgewater were able to come away with the victory. Luis Rodriguez led the way for the Bluefish with three hits.
